Europe Day Commemorates 1950 Schuman Declaration
Europe Day, celebrated annually on May 9th, commemorates the historic Schuman Declaration of 1950, which laid the foundation for European integration. The declaration, proposed by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman, called for placing French and German coal and steel production under a common authority, marking the first step toward what would eventually become the European Union. Europe Day has become one of the key symbols of the European Union alongside the EU flag, anthem, and motto, serving as a reminder of the peaceful cooperation that emerged from the devastation of World War II and helped transform former enemies into partners.
