Sociologist Examines How Fear of Femininity and Homosexuality Shapes Masculine Identity
A Slovak sociologist has highlighted how contemporary concepts of masculinity are influenced by fears of femininity, weakness, and homosexuality. Iva Šmídová discussed how modern expectations for men include being more emotionally open, participating more in caregiving roles, and becoming less rigid in their adherence to traditional masculine stereotypes. However, she questioned whether these evolving ideals actually communicate effectively with each other and what conditions society creates to support such changes. The analysis comes as societies across Europe grapple with changing gender roles and expectations for men in both personal and professional contexts.
