European Parliament Calls for Funding Mechanism Against Slovakia Over EU Money Protection Concerns

Share:

The European Parliament voted by a clear majority to call on the European Commission to trigger a conditionality mechanism against Slovakia, citing concerns that the country cannot guarantee adequate protection of European Union funds from misuse. The mechanism allows the EU to suspend funding to member states when they fail to safeguard European money against abuse. The European Union used the same procedure more than three years ago to halt financing to Hungary, where Viktor Orbán's government faced similar scrutiny over rule of law concerns. The conditionality mechanism represents one of the EU's strongest tools for ensuring member states maintain standards of governance and financial oversight required for continued access to European funding.
