Historian Calls for Dialogue Over Prosecution in Dunajská Streda Memorial Case

Share:

Historian Attila Simon, director of the Forum Institute for Minority Research, has criticized the criminal prosecution of those behind a memorial in Dunajská Streda, arguing the matter should be resolved through discussion rather than criminal law. Simon warned that a conviction in this case would have similar effects to legislation related to the Beneš Decrees, referring to post-World War II laws that expelled ethnic Germans and Hungarians from Czechoslovakia. The builders of what authorities call a "memorial of solidarity" face potential prison sentences of four to eight years. The case highlights tensions over minority rights and historical memory in Slovakia, where ethnic Hungarians comprise about 8% of the population, concentrated primarily in southern regions near the Hungarian border including Dunajská Streda.
