Slovakia's District Heating Sector Faces Decarbonization Challenges Amid Decentralization

Slovakia's effort to make its district heating systems more environmentally friendly is running into significant obstacles, with industry leaders pointing to decentralization as a key barrier. The chairman of the Slovak Association of Heat Supply Enterprises (SZVT), the body representing the country's district heating industry, sees the path forward in deeper integration between the heating and electricity sectors, particularly through the expanded use of large-scale heat pumps and electric boilers. District heating systems, which supply warmth to thousands of homes and businesses through centralized networks, are a major source of carbon emissions in Slovakia and are considered critical to meeting the country's climate targets. The shift away from fossil fuels in this sector is complicated by the fragmented, decentralized nature of heat supply across different municipalities and operators, making coordinated investment and modernization difficult to achieve at scale.
