Nearly half of all dementia cases worldwide could be prevented or delayed through lifestyle changes and better management of health risk factors, the World Health Organization has concluded. Dementia, a condition that causes progressive deterioration of memory and cognitive function, is currently the seventh leading cause of death globally. The WHO findings point to factors such as physical inactivity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, obesity, and untreated conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes as key contributors that individuals and health systems could address to reduce the burden of the disease.
