Ethiopia's Tigray Region Restores Parliament Operations Despite Federal Opposition

Share:

The northern Ethiopian region of Tigray has resumed parliamentary activities, a move that has been rejected by the federal government in Addis Ababa. Experts are expressing concerns that this development could lead to an escalation of tensions between the regional government and federal authorities. The restoration of parliamentary functions in Tigray represents a significant political challenge to Ethiopia's central government, which has been involved in a prolonged conflict with the region. Tigray, home to about 6 million people, has been at the center of a devastating civil war that began in 2020 when fighting erupted between federal forces and the Tigray People's Liberation Front, the region's former ruling party.
