Czech Priests Executed by Communists Declared Blessed by Pope

Share:

Two Czech Catholic priests, Bula and Drbola, who were executed by communist authorities, have been declared blessed by the Catholic Church. Pope Leo XIV approved their beatification in October 2025. The beatification recognizes the priests as martyrs who died for their faith under the communist regime that controlled Czechoslovakia from 1948 to 1989. During this period, the communist government systematically persecuted religious leaders and believers, executing, imprisoning, or forcing many clergy into hiding. The beatification process is the penultimate step toward sainthood in the Catholic Church, requiring evidence that the candidates died as martyrs or lived lives of exceptional holiness.
