French court sentences jihadist to life in prison for Yazidi genocide and crimes against humanity

A French court has sentenced a jihadist identified as Essid to life imprisonment for genocide against the Yazidi minority and crimes against humanity. The trial represents the first case of its kind prosecuted in France, marking a significant legal precedent for holding Islamic State militants accountable for their systematic persecution of religious minorities in Iraq and Syria. The Yazidi community, a Kurdish-speaking religious minority, faced widespread killings, enslavement, and sexual violence at the hands of ISIS fighters who captured their ancestral homeland in northern Iraq in 2014, leading to international recognition of the atrocities as genocide.
