Argentina Calls for Britain to Negotiate Falkland Islands Sovereignty
Share:
Argentina has called on Britain to enter negotiations over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands, the South Atlantic archipelago that has been a source of territorial dispute between the two nations. The islands, known as the Malvinas in Argentina, have been under British control since 1833, but Argentina has consistently claimed sovereignty over them. The call for negotiations comes amid reports that the United States government is considering a reassessment of its position on the dispute. The Falklands War in 1982 saw Argentina briefly occupy the islands before British forces reclaimed them, resulting in hundreds of deaths on both sides and cementing the islands' status as a major diplomatic flashpoint between London and Buenos Aires.
