Schmidt to Step Down as UN High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina
Christian Schmidt will resign from his position as High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, the international community's top civilian official in the country. His mandate was marked by significant conflicts and tensions, particularly with the Republika Srpska, the Serb-majority entity within Bosnia and Herzegovina. The High Representative position, established under the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement that ended the Bosnian War, oversees civilian implementation of the peace accords and has broad powers to impose decisions and remove officials who obstruct peace efforts. Schmidt's tenure has been characterized by ongoing disputes with Bosnian Serb leaders who have increasingly challenged the authority of state-level institutions and threatened secession.
