Slovakia Marks 50 Years Since Failed Crackdown on Plastic People Underground Movement
Share:
Fifty years ago, Czechoslovak authorities arrested members of the underground music movement known as the Plastic People, but the subsequent crackdown largely backfired for the communist regime's secret police, the ŠtB (State Security). What began as a broader investigation was scaled back under pressure, with only 14 people ultimately charged with hooliganism. Following orders from the Ministry, courts convicted just four individuals, and even those sentences were later reduced by half on appeal. The failed prosecution highlighted the regime's struggle to suppress underground cultural movements during the communist era in Czechoslovakia.
