UN Calls on Afghan Taliban to Stop Detaining Women

The United Nations has called on Afghanistan's Taliban government to halt the detention of women following reports of arrests in Herat province. Local media reported that at least 21 women and girls were detained in the western province. The Taliban, which regained control of Afghanistan in August 2021, has imposed severe restrictions on women's rights, including bans on education beyond primary school, most employment, and public activities without male guardians.
