Iran Compares Control of Strait of Hormuz to Nuclear Weapon, Threatens Legal Status Change

Share:

Iran has compared its control over the Strait of Hormuz to possessing a nuclear weapon and signaled potential changes to the waterway's legal status. An advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei made the provocative comparison, suggesting Tehran views the strategic chokepoint as a powerful geopolitical tool. The Iranian official indicated the country will not relinquish control over the strait and does not want to give up the profits from conflict and market influence. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical shipping lanes, with approximately one-fifth of global oil supplies passing through the narrow waterway between Iran and Oman.
