Gang violence in Haiti has killed more than 5,500 people in less than a year, according to the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The UN office called for decisive action against corruption and impunity as the Caribbean nation continues to struggle with widespread criminal activity. Haiti has been plagued by escalating gang violence since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, with armed groups controlling large portions of the capital Port-au-Prince and other areas, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis and the collapse of basic government services.
