Austrian Ex-MP Acquitted in Case Related to Wirecard Executive's Escape

An Austrian former member of parliament has been acquitted in a case connected to the escape of Wirecard's fugitive executive Jan Marsalek. Marsalek, an Austrian national, remains on Interpol's wanted list following the collapse of the German payment processor Wirecard in one of Europe's biggest corporate fraud scandals. The Wirecard scandal erupted in 2020 when the company admitted that €1.9 billion supposedly held in trust accounts probably never existed, leading to its insolvency and criminal investigations across multiple countries.
