France to Name New Nuclear Aircraft Carrier 'France Libre', Macron Announces

Share:

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that the country's new nuclear-powered aircraft carrier will be named 'France Libre' (Free France). The warship will replace the currently operational aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, which has served as the flagship of the French Navy. The name 'France Libre' refers to the resistance movement led by Charles de Gaulle during World War II, when French forces continued to fight against Nazi Germany after the country's official surrender in 1940. The new vessel represents a significant investment in France's naval capabilities and power projection capacity, continuing the country's tradition of maintaining a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier fleet.
