US and Iran Reportedly Developing Plan to Reopen Strait of Hormuz Within 30 Days of Peace Agreement

The United States and Iran are reportedly working on a historic plan that could end decades of hostility and reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz within 30 days of signing a peace agreement, according to Japan's Nikkei newspaper. Under the proposed arrangement, Iran would spend the 30-day period clearing naval mines from the waterway and subsequently allow free transit of ships without fees. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, through which about one-fifth of global oil supplies pass daily, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
