The Portuguese forces operate as part of a NATO battlegroup deployed in Slovakia — one of several such multinational units established by the alliance along its eastern flank following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. NATO formed these enhanced Forward Presence battlegroups to deter potential aggression, with Slovakia hosting one of the multinational contingents.
