Bratislava's Coronation Days Festival Brings Habsburg Era Back to Life in Old Town

Share:

Bratislava's historic Old Town was transformed into a living tableau of its imperial past this weekend as the annual Coronation Days festival drew crowds with historical re-enactors, knights, and a figure portraying Empress Maria Theresa. The event recreates the atmosphere of Pressburg — the city's former name under the Habsburg Empire — when Bratislava served as the coronation city of the Kingdom of Hungary. For nearly 250 years, from 1563 to 1830, Hungarian kings and queens were crowned in the city's St. Martin's Cathedral, making the event a significant part of the city's identity. The festival, a popular annual tradition, uses costumed performances, period parades, and theatrical re-enactments to connect residents and visitors with this distinctive chapter of Central European history.
