The United Nations refugee agency reported that 900 people died while attempting to flee Myanmar in 2025. Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya Muslims are escaping violence from Myanmar's military and Buddhist militias by crossing into neighboring Bangladesh. The Rohingya, a persecuted ethnic minority, have faced systematic violence and discrimination in Myanmar, with the military and allied groups conducting campaigns against the predominantly Muslim population in Rakhine State that international observers have characterized as ethnic cleansing and genocide.
