Travelling to Transnistria: A Gamble Few Slovak Tourists Take

Visiting Transnistria, the self-proclaimed breakaway state wedged between Moldova and Ukraine, is described as a pure gamble for travellers — a destination where buying a ticket is easy, but actually crossing the border is far from guaranteed. The territory, which declared independence from Moldova in 1991 and is backed by Russian military presence but recognised by virtually no country in the world, operates in a political and legal grey zone that makes travel unpredictable. Tourists do not go for monuments, though history is impossible to avoid in a region that remains frozen in a Soviet-era atmosphere. Nor do they typically go for the food — though prices are so strikingly low that visitors tend to sample everything on offer in local bistros and supermarkets.
