Ukrainian Intelligence Chief Discusses Controversial Military Unit Naming in Warsaw

Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine's military intelligence, held talks in Warsaw regarding Ukraine's decision to name a military unit after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), a World War II-era organization that fought both Soviet and Nazi forces but is also associated with massacres of Polish civilians. Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz acknowledged that while Poland and Ukraine are security partners, historical issues require open discussion of contentious matters. The UPA remains a deeply divisive topic between the two countries, as Ukraine views it as part of its independence struggle while Poland considers it responsible for ethnic cleansing that killed tens of thousands of Polish civilians in the 1940s.
