Nuns Build Kindergarten for Roma Children Despite Financial Hardship
Religious sisters in Jarovnice, near Prešov in eastern Slovakia, have constructed a new kindergarten building to serve children from the local Roma settlement, despite taking on significant debt to fund the project. The completed facility stands empty, lacking furniture, toys, and equipment, as the nuns work to secure additional funding to make it operational. Sister Ráchel walked through the bare classrooms, describing plans for toys, folding beds, and seating areas that will eventually serve the community's children. The project represents the nuns' commitment to providing educational opportunities for Roma children, who often face barriers to accessing mainstream educational services in Slovakia. Roma communities frequently experience discrimination and segregation in education, making such dedicated facilities particularly significant for improving educational outcomes and social integration.
