Slovak Patient Defies Health Insurance Denial, Crowdfunds Life-Saving Treatment in Prague

Share:

A Slovak patient named Kishka refused to accept a denial from VšZP, Slovakia's largest public health insurer, and instead sought private funding to undergo medical treatment in Prague that ultimately saved his life. The treatment cost 320,000 euros, which was raised through donations from supporters. VšZP is Slovakia's General Health Insurance Company, the country's primary public health insurance provider that covers the majority of Slovak citizens. The case highlights ongoing tensions between patients and Slovakia's public health insurance system over coverage decisions for expensive treatments, particularly those requiring care abroad.
