Charity fundraising increasingly fills gaps in Slovakia's healthcare system
Healthcare in Slovakia is increasingly dependent on charity donations as patients struggle to access adequate medical care through the state system. Health-related causes account for nearly half of all fundraising campaigns on the Donio donation platform, which collected 4.4 million euros for medical needs in the past year, according to platform representative Zuzana Suchová. The situation reflects a broader crisis where survival often depends on public sympathy and solidarity rather than systematic healthcare provision. Healthcare advocates describe patients as becoming "hostages of the system," highlighting how access to medical treatment is increasingly determined by financial means rather than medical need. The reliance on charitable giving to cover essential healthcare costs raises fundamental questions about the state's obligation to provide medical care for its citizens.
