Holocaust Survivor Eva Mária Umlauf Shares Story of Survival and Trauma in New Podcast
Eva Mária Umlauf, a Holocaust survivor born in a Jewish labor camp in Nováky, Slovakia, has shared her life story in a new podcast titled "I Don't Have to Hate, but I Don't Have to Forgive Either." Born during World War II, Umlauf's family fled to Piešťany during the Slovak National Uprising using false documents, but were betrayed and sent first to a camp in Žilina, then to Sereď, before being deported to Auschwitz in November 1944, where she last saw her father. After the war, she moved to West Germany where her husband lived, followed by her parents. Following unexpected widowhood in 1971, she remarried and had two more sons, but the trauma of her Holocaust experience resurfaced after the birth of her third child. Umlauf subsequently studied psychotherapy and now dedicates herself to educational work and Holocaust awareness. She has written an autobiographical book titled "The Number on Your Forearm is Blue Like Your Eyes," documenting her experiences as a child Holocaust survivor and her journey of healing.
