Slovak Environment Ministry Approves Controversial Slovnaft Waste Incinerator in Bratislava

Slovakia's Ministry of Environment has approved plans for a new waste incinerator to be built within the refinery complex of Slovnaft, a major oil refining company, on the outskirts of Bratislava. The ministry concluded its environmental impact assessment (EIA) — a mandatory review process evaluating a project's effects on the surrounding environment and public health — and issued a statement saying it had considered the current state of the environment in the affected area, as well as the anticipated scale, location, and significance of potential impacts on both the environment and local residents. During the EIA process, 29 written submissions and one formal petition were received, reflecting public concern over the project. The approval is controversial, as Slovnaft's refinery is already located in a densely populated urban region, and critics have raised concerns about air quality and health risks for nearby communities. The decision clears a key regulatory hurdle for the project to move forward, though further permits may still be required before construction can begin.
