Hungarian Opposition Leader Sparks Diplomatic Storm with Trianon Anniversary Speech

Share:

Hungarian opposition politician Péter Magyar triggered diplomatic tensions with neighboring countries after stating that "Hungary borders only itself" during a speech marking the anniversary of the Treaty of Trianon. The controversial phrase, which has appeared repeatedly in Hungarian public discourse over the years, has consistently caused problems with Hungary's neighbors when invoked by political figures. The Treaty of Trianon, signed in 1920, reduced Hungary's territory by two-thirds and left large Hungarian minorities in surrounding countries including Slovakia, Romania, and Serbia, making references to pre-war borders a sensitive diplomatic issue in the region.
