Bratislava Opens New Riverside Park on Former Derelict Danube Riverbank

A neglected stretch of the Danube riverbank in Bratislava has been transformed into a public park, opening to visitors just three months before local elections. The new Nábrežný park Staré Lido, located on the Petržalka side of the river a short distance from the Old Bridge, was previously an overgrown wasteland cluttered with debris, old pipes, and construction waste that most residents avoided. The site has been cleared and equipped with walking and cycling paths, benches, a firepit area, and green spaces, drawing families, cyclists, and joggers to the riverside. Petržalka is a densely populated residential district on the south bank of the Danube, home to one of the largest housing estate communities in Central Europe, and has historically lacked accessible green public spaces along the riverfront. The park's opening ahead of local elections is likely to attract political attention, as urban green space and quality of life have become key issues for Bratislava voters.
