Ali Mohammad Naini, a spokesman for Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was killed in what Tehran described as a joint Israeli-American attack. Iranian officials accused the United States and Israel of conducting the operation that resulted in Naini's death. The Revolutionary Guards characterized the incident as martyrdom and condemned what they called cowardly terrorism. The IRGC is Iran's elite military force responsible for protecting the Islamic Republic's political system and projecting power across the Middle East through proxy groups.
