Islamic militants abducted more than 300 people in northeastern Nigeria in a mass kidnapping operation. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred in a region that has been plagued by insurgent activity for years. Northeastern Nigeria has been the epicenter of violence by various militant groups, including Boko Haram and its offshoots, which have conducted numerous kidnappings and attacks against civilians and security forces since launching their insurgency in 2009.
