Hungarian Opposition Party Proposes Constitutional Term Limit for Prime Ministers

Share:

Hungary's opposition Tisza party has proposed a constitutional amendment that would limit prime ministers to serving a maximum of eight years in office. The proposal would effectively bar current Prime Minister Viktor Orbán from continuing in his role, as he has already served well beyond this proposed limit. Orbán, who leads the ruling Fidesz party, has been Hungary's prime minister for a total of 14 years across two separate periods - from 1998 to 2002 and again since 2010. The Tisza party, led by Péter Magyar, emerged as a significant opposition force in recent European Parliament elections and has positioned itself as the main challenger to Orbán's long-standing rule. Constitutional amendments in Hungary require a two-thirds parliamentary majority, making passage of such a proposal unlikely given Fidesz's current control of the legislature.
