French Ambassador Returns to Algeria After Year-Long Absence as Paris Seeks to Restore Diplomatic Relations

Share:

France's ambassador to Algeria has returned to the North African country after a year-long absence, as the Elysee Palace seeks to restore diplomatic dialogue between the two nations. The diplomatic mission will focus partly on securing the return of French journalist Gleizes, who remains in Algeria amid ongoing tensions. The ambassador's return marks a significant step in efforts to repair relations between France and its former colony, which have been strained over historical grievances and contemporary political disputes. Algeria recalled its ambassador from Paris in 2021 following comments by French President Emmanuel Macron questioning Algeria's existence as a nation before French colonization.
