Bratislava's SNP Square Takes Shape After Years of Major Reconstruction

The most extensive overhaul of Bratislava's central SNP Square in decades is nearing a visible stage of completion, with new trees, granite paving, and underground water storage systems now in place. SNP Square — named after the Slovak National Uprising of 1944 against Nazi occupation and serving as the symbolic heart of the Slovak capital — has undergone sweeping changes both above and below ground as part of a long-running redevelopment project. The reconstruction represents one of the most significant transformations of Bratislava's city center in recent memory, modernizing the square's infrastructure while reshaping its public space. One notable departure from the original plans is the road surface: asphalt has been laid instead of the decorative paving that was initially proposed for the roadway portion of the square.
