Russia and China Block UN Security Council Resolution on Strait of Hormuz Protection
Share:
Russia and China vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution that would have supported joint protection of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor for global oil transport. The proposed resolution aimed to establish a framework for reopening and securing the strategic waterway, which connects the Persian Gulf to international waters. Persian Gulf states have expressed serious concerns about threats to oil shipments through the strait, which handles approximately one-fifth of the world's petroleum traffic. The veto effectively halts international efforts to coordinate security measures for the vital shipping route, leaving the protection of oil flows through the region without formal UN backing.
