EU and UK Strike Landmark Deal to Remove Gibraltar-Spain Border Controls

The European Union and the United Kingdom have reached a landmark agreement to eliminate border controls between Spain and Gibraltar, ending years of dispute over the strategically located British Overseas Territory at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. The deal was sealed in Brussels by Maroš Šefčovič, the EU's lead negotiator and a Slovak commissioner, alongside British representatives. The agreement is expected to allow the freer movement of people and goods across the Gibraltar-Spain border, which has long been a source of friction between the two sides. Gibraltar, a British territory bordering Spain, has been a particularly contentious issue since the UK left the European Union in 2020 — a process known as Brexit — which ended Gibraltar's automatic access to the EU's single market and created new complications at its land border with Spain. The breakthrough marks a significant step in normalizing post-Brexit relations between London and Brussels in one of the most sensitive territorial disputes left unresolved by the UK's departure from the bloc.
