Alexei Smirnov, former governor of Russia's Kursk region, received a 14-year prison sentence for accepting bribes in connection with border fortification construction contracts. Russian investigators determined that between 2022 and 2023, Smirnov and his deputy took bribes from companies involved in building defensive structures along the border. The former governor pleaded guilty to the corruption charges and was also ordered to pay a fine and forfeit assets. Additionally, he faces a 10-year ban from holding public office following his prison term. The Kursk region borders Ukraine and has been a focal point for military fortification efforts since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
